The Southern Route
Our basic 8 day journey is perfect for solo travelers as well as small groups of friends/family. Our trip is limited to 8 people and takes
you to Lisbon, the Alentejo, the Atlantic and the Algarve. Your guide and driver Claudio Hermani will unlock the wonders of both the
cities and magnificent countryside.
Itinerary – You spend 2 days in fascinating Lisbon visiting the ramparts of Castelo de Sao Jorge, ride a 100 year old tram, explore wide
avenues and quaint calles (side streets), spend time in the neighborhoods of Biaxa and Rossio, listen to Fado and taste the delicacies of
the area. Our hotel is the former city Palace of the Taborda family, in the elegant quarter of Lapa.
We also visit Belem and Cascais and drive along one of Portugal’s most beautiful roads to Europe‘s western-most tip, and on to Unesco
Heritage Town of Sintra for an afternoon.
After Lisbon we voyage inland to the Alentejo, an immense rural area, visiting Evora and driving through the vast fields of wheat, cork
oak trees, olive and grapes, that now produce Portugal‘s best wines. We stay in the Guadiana Valley. Possibilities abound – the only
challenge is deciding what to do next… a hot air balloon ride, cooking lessons, bird watching, exploring ruins and castles or just
relaxing – it is up to you to enjoy and choose.
Days 5 and 6 take us on a leisurely drive in direction of the Atlantic, passing Castro Verde and Ourique, where in 1139 the Moores
were beaten by the later King Henrique and Portugal founded as a state. We stay at a quaint inn where we can have a dip in the pool. Later we try another local specialty, pork with clams. And to digest, a home-distilled aquavit, Medronho.
The next day includes a drive south, to Cabo San Vincente with its fort and lighthouse, Lagos and a boat ride (weather permitting) to the
unique caves of Ponte da Piedade. The remainder of the day is for swimming, bike riding or relaxing by the pool. Then there is a cooking class where we learn to fill a crab the Portuguese way – all the while tasting some good, fresh Vinho Verde.
Day 7 takes us north to Troia, Setubal and the beautiful Caribbean-like beaches to enjoy sun, sand, dolphin watching and seafood!
Day 8 is a return to Lisbon. For those with late flights home, we have time to visit a museum or stroll the attractive neighborhoods before
heading to the airport.
